AIB Release and Completion Paths

The Alternative Incarceration Branch is a Sheriff-operated, minimum-security alternative-confinement facility connected to the Adult Detention Center. It holds people approved for Work Release or Community Labor Force placement and serves as the base for Electronic Incarceration. Each track allows a different degree of movement. None makes mere physical presence outside a secure unit proof of discharge.

A successful participant may complete the custodial or program portion and return fully to the community. Probation or another court duty may remain. A rule violation, loss of eligibility, an unresolved hold, or an adverse program decision can instead lead to return to secure confinement at the ADC. The status record must identify which event occurred. That distinction prevents a work schedule, field assignment, or home placement from being misread as the final end of custody.

Confirm an AIB Release

No separate public AIB recent-release feed exists. Verification runs through the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office, the branch, and the court record. The useful question is not whether the person was seen outside. Ask whether AIB participation ended successfully, whether secure confinement resumed, and whether supervision remained after completion.

1. Identify the person with a full legal name, date of birth, Fairfax inmate ID when known, court number, and approximate program dates.
2. Call the published AIB numbers, 703-246-4478 or 703-246-4465, to reach the correct branch contact. Ask which official channel can confirm current program or completion status.
3. Use the Sheriff's main ADC line at 703-246-2100 and ask for the correctional status and release date associated with the booking. Press 4, then use inmate information or the bond, release-date, and court-date branch.
4. Read the sentencing or program order in the Fairfax court docket. Check for completion terms, probation, electronic incarceration, or an order returning the person to secure custody.
5. Request the existing Sheriff status and release record when spoken information is not enough. Ask for the recorded event rather than asking staff to draw a conclusion.

If the person moved into VADOC supervision after completion, the statewide locator may show an active community-supervision location. Fairfax GDC Court Services handles a different group, including pretrial supervision and eligible local probation cases. The order identifies the responsible agency. AIB Records and Contact

AIB is operationally distinct from the secure ADC even though the facilities connect. Branch phone contacts can route program questions, but the Sheriff remains the records custodian for correctional status and release-date information. The court clerk holds the underlying order. Neither source should be replaced with an unofficial roster.

The published branch numbers route callers to the responsible Fairfax Sheriff staff. That direct contact step can prevent confusion.

The agency page confirms the alternative-confinement setting. It does not provide a named-person release list, completion roster, or proof that an individual program ended.

AIB Alternative Confinement Records

The branch's three named functions must be kept separate. Work Release permits approved work outside during authorized hours with return or continued control. Community Labor Force places eligible participants in approved labor activity while the court or Sheriff arrangement remains active. Electronic Incarceration uses an approved location and monitoring structure as a form of confinement. None is the same as an unconditional release.

The Sheriff's correctional-status field is unusually helpful because SOP 530 lists work release as one of the possible statuses. A request should preserve the exact label and date. If the branch or court uses a code, ask for its existing definition. Do not translate AIB language with terms from another county's work-release program.

AIB Work Release Is Not Discharge

AIB's defining release issue is the gap between movement and legal status. A participant may commute to an approved job, report to a labor site, or remain at an authorized residence under electronic controls. The person can therefore be present in ordinary community spaces while still confined by the AIB order. Seeing that person outside does not answer whether the sentence, placement, or Sheriff custody ended.

Use three records to resolve the question. The program or court order states what movement is allowed and when the term should end. The Sheriff's correctional status shows whether AIB or work-release control remains. The final release or completion transaction records the end of that custody episode. If probation follows, the sentencing order and supervising-agency record show the next legal stage.

A return to the ADC is also easy to misread. Under the Sheriff's return-to-secure-confinement policy, a violation or eligibility change can move a participant from AIB back into a secure unit. Unless the official record shows a new arrest, that return should not be labeled one. It can be a custody-level change within the same case or sentence.

AIB Completion and Court Records

Fairfax court records supply legal context that the branch status alone may not show. A docket can identify the case number, charge, sentence, active and suspended time, probation term, violation proceedings, and later orders. General District Court handles misdemeanors and felony preliminary proceedings. Circuit Court holds felony judgments and appealed misdemeanor matters. The correct clerk depends on the case.

Read the newest order. A planned completion date may change because the court modified a term, the person lost eligibility, a violation was filed, another hold appeared, or credit was recalculated. A docket entry may show the date of the judicial act, while the Sheriff's record shows when AIB or ADC staff completed the status change.

When active probation remains, determine whether Fairfax GDC Court Services or VADOC District 29 is responsible. Court Services can handle eligible local probation and pretrial supervision. VADOC manages state community supervision. A VADOC locator miss does not rule out local Court Services, and a local program record does not establish state supervision.

Note: AIB completion ends an alternative-confinement placement, but only the governing order shows whether another supervision term follows.

AIB Release Status Changes

AIB records can involve more than a simple completed or not-completed result. The most useful request asks for dated, existing entries: admission to the branch, approved program type, return to secure ADC confinement if it occurred, successful completion, final local release, and any transfer destination recorded by the Sheriff. Narrow dates and identifiers help staff locate the right record and reduce unrelated material.

A person who finishes AIB can enter the community, move under probation, or face another lawful hold. If another jurisdiction becomes the custodian, follow that destination rather than treating the AIB exit as freedom from all custody. Virginia Jail VINE may report a local custody change, but its event must be checked against the Sheriff's more specific transaction.

The same caution applies to immigration process. Fairfax ended its ICE service agreement and does not extend local custody solely on an administrative detainer past the fixed lawful release time. A judicial immigration warrant can authorize continued custody. The Sheriff's 2018 booking-policy revision documents the local change.

That policy gives context when an AIB or ADC release record identifies federal immigration process. A judicially authorized transfer is still not community discharge.
